Causes of Inflammatory Spine Disorders

The most common inflammatory spine disorder is Ankylosing Spondylitis. It is a type of arthritis that causes long term inflammation primarily of the spine. The exact cause of Ankylosing Spondylitis is unknown but it is known that 90% of AS sufferers have a human leukocyte antigen called HBLA-250. This can be tested for via a simple blood test. It is believed that the underlying cause is linked to autoimmunity.

Many of the patients we see also fall into the category of having an inflammatory spine disorder characterised by their symptoms however they do not test positive for HBLA-250. It is not know what causes this however the treatment is much the same.
