What to expect during your Scoliosis Initial Consultation
The initial consultation is designed to give you a comprehensive assessment and a treatment plan tailored to your specific scoliosis needs. The 60-minute session gives your physiotherapist the time to evaluate your unique curve pattern and outline a clear way forward. Please wear clothing that makes it easy for us to see your spine and bring along any relevant scans (like X-rays or MRIs) to your appointment.

Our dedicated Physiotherapy team have a passion for helping our patients. With a deep understanding of the complexities of spinal health, they are highly skilled and experienced in treating spines and spine-related disorders. Our empathetic and professional team are here to listen and to provide best practice clinical care, tailored to your individual needs.
Here’s what you can expect during your first visit:
Comprehensive Assessment
- Detailed client history
We’ll start by discussing your medical history, scoliosis diagnosis, and any related symptoms such as pain, stiffness, breathing difficulties, or functional limitations.
- Postural assessment and scoliosis screening
Your physiotherapist will observe your posture in various positions to look for any asymmetries. They will then conduct specific scoliosis tests to determine the location of your scoliosis, its mobility, and how it affects your movement and function.
- Radiological evaluation
If you’ve brought a recent X-ray, we’ll analyse it to measure factors like Cobb angles, vertebral rotation, and overall frontal and sagittal plane balance. If you don’t have a recent scan, that’s okay—your physiotherapist can provide a referral, and this step can be completed at your next appointment. - Classification of Curve Pattern Type
Combining your radiological findings with the postural assessment, your physiotherapist will diagnose your curve pattern type using the Rigo Classification (BSPTS).
Personalised Treatment Plan
- Advice and Education
We strongly believe knowledge is power, so understanding your individual scoliosis is essential. We’ll explain the nature of your scoliosis, its potential for progression, and how you can effectively manage it moving forward. - Manual Therapy
If you’re experiencing pain, we may use techniques such as spinal mobilisation and soft tissue release to help alleviate your symptoms.
- Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise (PSSE)
Our specialist physiotherapists are trained in the Rigo Concept (BSPTS), which originated from the Schroth technique. PSSE involves exercises tailored to your specific curve pattern, focusing on active 3D spinal correction, strengthening the corrected posture, and incorporating it into your daily life. - Bracing
For growing children and adolescents with significant scoliosis, bracing may be necessary to prevent curve progression. If required, we can refer you to a specialist bracing service.
